Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons
The 8th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons took place in New York from the 3rd May to the 28th May 2010 and was chaired by Ambassador Libran N. Cabactulan of the Philippines. The Review Conference adopted by consensus a
final document
that includes three Action Plans aimed at fostering nuclear disarmament, non proliferation and the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
The Review Conference also agreed on practical step leading to full implementation of the 1995 Resolution on the Middle East, including the convening of a conference on the establishment of a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons and all other weapons of mass destruction.
Consistent with its traditional commitment to uphold the multilateral regime of nuclear disarmament and non proliferation, Italy strongly supported strengthening the NPT, in particular through the entry into force of the Complete Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), the negotiation of a treaty banning the production of fissile material for nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices (FMCT) and the universalization of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Additional Protocol, which should become the standard to verify compliance with NPT obligations.
