First Committee
The First Committee of the General Assembly, which usually meets in October, discusses and adopts resolutions and decisions related to disarmament and international security.
Resolutions and decisions may be adopted either by consensus or by a recorded vote and can repeat previous years’ subjects or introduce new ones. Resolutions and decisions adopted by the First Committee are eventually voted again by the General Assembly, usually in December.
The Office for Disarmament Affairs (ODA) provides technical and substantive assistance to various disarmament bodies, including the First Committee of the General Assembly. Its website offers general information on disarmament matters and comprises also a database on the General Assembly Resolutions and Decisions, the status and texts of the Treaties and the UN Register on Conventional Arms.
As a member of the European Union, Italy aligned herself with the position of the EU during the 64th and 65th sessions of the UNGA First Committee.
