I'm deeply saddened by the news of the major loss of human life suffered by the United Nations as a result of the devastating earthquake that struck the the island of Haiti. on behalf of all Italy and myself I wish to express - with the request that my words be extended to the families - my heartfelt condolences for the United Nations officials who died in the line of duty on their mission of peace and assistance to the people of Haiti. In these dramatic circumstances allow me to express my sincere appreciation for the effort that the Uninted Nations is deplying to bring relief to the people who have been so seriuously afflicted and for the rebuilding of Haiti. I confirm that Italy will not fail to provide its support for the initiatives of solidarity with the haitian people and the cause of the rebirth of Haiti. Giorgio Napolitano
