“I was overwhelmed by the extreme gravity of the earthquake that struck the Republic of Haiti yesterday. The United Nations, which has long been engaged in bringing peace, stability and development to that long-suffering Country, also paid a toll in terms of victims from among its own staff, other people it employs in various capacities, and material damages. Italy will not fail to participate in the international mobilization already underway.
In addition to the words of human solidarity we have already conveyed to the Haitian Government, I wish to express to you, on behalf of the Italian Government and myself, our deepest condolences over the loss of human life from among the ranks of the United Nations.
